Zone-Controlled AirJet® Fogger Nozzles Humidify Paper Handling and Storage Facility
Spray nozzles solved more than just humidity problem
PROBLEM: Maintaining proper humidity levels is critical in the paper handling and storage business. Improper humidity levels can ruin white paper and damage the cutting and packaging machinery. This Oregon facility used portable tank humidifiers with a siphon type nozzle. The ten year old tanks had seen better days. They were crusty due to corrosion caused by paper dust and they were constantly dripping on the floor. Despite on-going maintenance, the humidifiers weren't providing regulated moisture. Puddles littered the plant floor from huge plastic sheets the company hung from a 25 foot (7.6 m) high ceiling trying to regulate the moisture between different areas of the plant. Further complicating the problem was algae growth, since the humidifiers used untreated well water.
SOLUTION: Spraying Systems Co. could have recommended a typical self-contained unit with air atomizer spray nozzles. However, that would have required large amounts of compressed air and the company did not want to invest thousands of dollars on a new air compressor. The answer: AirJet Fogger nozzles because of their efficient use of compressed air. In fact, in this application, the company was able to use its secondary back-up air compressor rather than purchasing a new one.
The entire system is controlled by five zones, each zone operates independently depending on the moisture requirements of that particular area. The number of nozzles per zone varies from 18 to 26. The nozzles were double mounted on PVC piping hung from the ceiling which provided excellent distribution.
Instead of algae-infested, leaking humidifiers, the new system is a closed system, significantly reducing corrosion and clogging caused by paper dust. The only maintenance time now required is to periodically clean the internal strainer; a job quickly done without tools.
